If you’re worried about other people’s perceptions of you…
I’m going to use a phrase that normally has negative connotations. But, sometimes there is another context for it. A powerful freeing one.
The world doesn’t revolve around you.
That’s right. If you spend time thinking about what others think of you, think about this instead:
We all live in our own heads and we’re all the star of the show. We spend the vast majority of our time thinking about…ourselves. We may spend a little time here and there thinking about (and yes, judging) others. But mostly we just think about ourselves. Guess what? Everyone does this. They’re not spending hours and days parsing every word that’s come out of our mouths or every single thing we’ve done or not done. They’re not pouring over data analyzing our successes and failures.
They have their own stuff to deal with.
The world doesn’t revolve around you and people are preoccupied with themselves. So guess what? You’re off whatever hook you’ve put yourself on 🙂 Other people’s perceptions are not nearly as important as you think they are.
