When it seems like you can’t do anything right…
We’ve all been there. Everything we touch turns to shit. Just can’t do a damn thing right. And all we can think about is “when is this going to end? When will things start going well again?” Fear not, there’s something you can do about it.
First let’s understand what’s happening: we’ve lost our way. We’re likely stressed and not at our best. So we start trying *too* hard. When we try too hard, we’re no longer at our best. We’re overthinking everything and nothing comes naturally. Everything is a pain, a grind. We’re falling down the side of a mountain and there’s no way to stop it.
This is common to athletes who’ve lost their way. Winners start underperforming and losing. They’re overthinking EVERY SINGLE thing and in the process making mistakes all over the place. Their confidence goes to shit, they are a mess, they can’t do the basics they’ve done their entire lives. So how do they turn it around? And how do we apply that to our own situations?
The key is in here: “they can’t do the basics they’ve done their entire lives”.
It’s the basics. The basics are what we have to get right first.
The seemingly trivial things are the key to everything. We just focus on those and they allow us to get some quick wins. Quick wins help stop the feeling of failure and give us a foundation to build confidence. They also allow us to regain control.
I know it seems too easy but trust me, this is the way out. Do the easy basics. They help us stop the fall down the side of the mountain. Once control has been gained and we’ve had a chance to take a breather and rebuilt our confidence, we can start back up the mountain. As the easy stuff stops being a problem, we can start focusing on more difficult challenges.
Long story short, get back to the basics. Keep it simple.
