The Wheel of Life exercise
This is the classic coaching tool. It allows a person to make a clear visual representation of their life and what they’re happy with and what they want to improve.
The exercise is simple:
Draw a circle and split it into 8. For each piece of the pie, write the numbers 1 through 10 radiating out from the center.
Each piece of the pie represents a specific area of life:
- Fun– Happiness, Hobbies
- Relationship– current or future Life Partner
- Career– Job satisfaction, Career path
- Family– Children, Parents, Relatives
- Social– Friends, Sport, Activities
- Health– Exercise, Diet
- Financial– Savings, Investments
- Creative– Self-space, Spiritual, Sport, Artistic
The end result should look something like this (or, you can download and print it by clicking the link at the end of this article).

Next, assign numbers to each category with 1 being totally unsatisfied and 10 being totally satisfied.
You can connect them if you wish to create a spider chart for better visualization.
What are the 2 lowest scores? What are the 2 areas you want to improve the most?
How would you feel if you could significantly move forward in these 2 areas?
What could you do to start moving forward in these areas?
Answering these questions will allow you to set a direction. Once you’ve defined the direction, you can begin to think through what it’s going to take to reach your goal, prioritize your tasks, and get going!
