Consistency: the 51% rule

There’s exactly 1 thing that will change you, your circumstances, your life. You know what it is but the way it’s been presented to you is honestly toxic.

I’m talking about consistency.

Generally this is how it goes: “The CEO secret: consistency” or “The sales secret: consistency” or “The fitness secret: consistency”.

You’ve heard this stuff plenty of times.

While those comments have a lot of truth in them, they fail you by leaving you with the idea that:

Consistency means always, all the time, no matter what, always and forever and forget your loved ones, and forget work and forget sleep and forget………blah blah blah……and consistency always and and and…….

Sigh.

There are 2 ways this goes:

We either don’t even start the thing we would like to be consistent at because we’re not ready to give up our entire life and identity or, we are insanely consistent for a few weeks or months and then we quit. We can’t sustain it.

Please stop listening to those people. Here’s all you need to know about consistency: 51%

51% is simply the majority of the time. Let me ask you a few questions.

If you exercised 183 days out of the year do you think you’d be in better physical condition (super duper bonus: your mental wellbeing is directly tied to your physical wellbeing)?

If you worked an hour a day for 183 days out of the year on that side project you’ve been wanting to do, do you think you’d accomplish it? Maybe it’s a BIG project. Do you think you could take a large chunk out of it?

If you ate healthier 51% of the time do you think you’d be better off?

If 51% of the disorganization in your life became organized how would that change your life?

If you cut down that bad habit by 51% how would you feel about yourself?

If you felt better about yourself 51% more often, how badass would that be?

If you had 51% more clarity about the direction you’re going in would that be useful?

What if you were 51% calmer?

How about 51% more confident?

What if you had 51% more control of the things you’re able to control?

What if you made a 51% improvement in an area of your life that’s been a struggle?

What if fear of failure or imposter syndrome were reduced by 51%

What if you procrastinated 51% less?

What if there was 51% less doubt?

What if you were 51% more resilient? If this was an advertisement this is where I’d say “But wait, there’s more!”

It’s not but here’s some more:

– It’s normal as hell to fall off the wagon. Just get back on. That’s all. If you can’t immediately get back on, get back on when you can. It’s fine. What matters is that you do. Consistency is not about perfection because that doesn’t exist.

– Once you get used to doing the good thing 51% of the time, it becomes much easier to do it 65% of the time…and 80% of the time….and….all the time.
